AMC March Round-Up

The Bride!

Rating: R — Runtime: 2hr 6min — 2026

Logline: In 1930s Chicago, Frankenstein asks Dr. Euphronius to help create a companion. They give life to a murdered woman as the Bride, sparking romance, police interest, and radical social change. (IMDb)

I rated this film 4 1/2 stars on Letterboxd. I have to start of by saying that I love the Universal Monsters so this movie was a given. I was excited to see the direction that Maggie Gyllanhaal was going to take with adapting the Bride of Frankenstein story. I really enjoyed this film and the way she moved the plot to Chicago 1930’s, giving it a gritty, gangster vibe. Jessie Buckley was absolutely phenominal in this role. I think something that worked really well was how the bride was able to be her own entity before coming together with Frankenstein.

Would I recommend it? Yes.

Undertone

Rating: R — Runtime: 1hr 34min — 2026

Logline: The host of a popular paranormal podcast becomes haunted by terrifying recordings mysteriously sent her way. (IMDb)

I rated this film 4/5 stars on Letterboxd. This film was one of my most anticipated for the year and was bummed when it wasn’t available for streaming during Sundance (but I am glad I was still able to see three other films via Sundance.) However, after seeing this movie in theaters I completely understand why it needed to be an in theater experience. This film is absolutely a master class in sound for film. The ability to create so much tension for the viewer while only taking place in a few locations, mostly the house, and around two physical characters was what made this movie unlike any other. I do think my rating would be different if I didn’t see it in Dolby but I did really enjoy it. It was the first time in awhile that I left the theater on edge.

Would I recommend it? Yes, but please watch it in Dolby if possible (or a really good sound system)

Reminders of Him

Rating: PG-13 — Runtime: 1hr 54min

Logline: After prison, a woman attempts to reconnect with her young daughter but faces resistance from everyone except a bar owner with ties to her child. As they grow closer, she must confront her past mistakes to build a hopeful future. (IMDb)

I gave this film 3 1/2 out of 5 on Letterboxd. I HAVE to acknowledge that I am not a fan of Colleen Hoover. The sole reason I went to see this film was the cast. I absolutely loved the chemistry between Maika Monroe and Tyriq Withers and that is the reason for my score. Did the story make a ton of sense? Not at all. But did I enjoy the acting? Absolutely. If it wasn’t for the cast, I would not have even seen it. I am glad I did though and it did make me cry.

Would I recommend it? I feel like I have to say yes because I did recommend it to my mom and aunt and they loved it.

Slanted

Rating: R — Runtime: 1hr 43min

Logline: An insecure Chinese-American teenager undergoes experimental surgery to appear white, hoping to secure the prom queen title and peer acceptance. (IMDb)

I rated this film 4 out of 5 on Letterboxd. Amy Wang created such a unique film and it was a blast to watch. I have to acknowledge that McKenna Grace has been in so much horror related projects lately and she aces it again in this role. I know this film didn’t get a super huge release but it is definitely worth a watch! Body horror and teenage girls are hell.

Would I recommend it? Yes!
